New
Exam
Information from T.W. Parnell,
PostalExam.com:
"New
Postal exam 473 for most fulltime jobs is offered
much more frequently than the old 470 exam it
replaced. Individual Postal districts gave the old
exam publicly only once every several years, but
most districts offer the new 473 test at least once
or twice a year. This is due to the new test's extreme
failure rate. Astoundingly, about 80% of all
applicants fail this exam. No other exam has ever
carried a failure rate this high. With only about
20% passing, the resulting small list of qualified
applicants is used up quickly, and they are forced
to give the test again soon. This incredible failure
rate reinforces the need for effective test
preparation. For full details and up-to-date study

Hiring and Exam Info |
Jobs in the USPS are generally grouped into two
categories - craft/bargaining and non-bargaining. Craft/bargaining positions are generally
those that require a postal exam (see below) and consists of the traditional jobs such as
letter carrier and clerk. Non-bargaining positions include a wide variety of
administrative, managerial and support jobs that include accountant, chemist, engineer,
marketing specialist, real estate specialist and safety specialists, etc. Some of these
jobs are open to the public, but many are not.
Craft/bargaining positions (letter carrier, clerk, etc.) usually have a large pool
of applicants that have applied for those positions. In order to be hired in a reasonable
period of time, or hired at all, it is imperative that you score as high as possible on
the postal exam for the respective position. Applicants who have passed the test are put
on a list ranked by test score. Those with the highest scores are interviewed first. |

How To Ace The Exam |
|
Postal exams are rather difficult for those
who
have not practiced the various drills present on the exam. Do not expect to score high or
even pass the test if you have not practiced prior to taking the exam. There are a variety
of postal study guides available at local bookstores and on the Internet that contain
information, tips, tricks, and practice exams that can give you the edge in obtaining the
postal job that you want. Listed to the left are some of the latest postal guides now available
at Amazon.com - offered in association with PostalMag.com.
You should purchase the appropriate guide at
least a month prior to your scheduled test. Take a practice test each night and (after 30
days) you will be well prepared by the time of your test. Believe it or not, many if not
most of the applicants at the test with you will not have practiced, giving you the edge
and quite probably one of the highest scores. The smartest individual in the
examination room, regardless of IQ, is the one that has practiced, practiced, and
practiced. Good luck!
(We
can't guarantee that you will score higher using the above method.
However, this advice worked for PostalMag.com owner Tom Wakefield. About
30 days before his postal exam, Tom bought a postal exam study guide and
practiced a test each night. He scored 100 on the test and was hired
soon after!) |
